Saving Cash Using Flourescents . Not Just A Dull Flicker Any Longer

Fluorescent lights no longer give just a dim flicker. Yes they are the green alternative to normal light bulbs, but they can also be funky and are a favourite of current designers. So why are they a good environmental alternative, and what's so hip about them?

Every electrician will tell you that fluorescent lights have a tendency to last four to ten times as long as normal (filament) light bulbs and use roughly 20% of the energy. The trouble with normal light bulbs is that 95% of the electricity they use is lost through heat and merely 5% is literally utilized to light up a room.

Despite the fact that fluorescent bulbs are more expensive to buy at first, they will save you money in the long run, generally paying for themselves in under a year. And they fit in most existing light fittings, so you won't even call for an electrician to change your fittings.

One more direct green advantage is that since the light bulbs last so much longer they generate less waste for the garbage dump as less are being thrown away every year. And once you're fitting them and doing your part, you might even feel so green and environmentally alert that you take your tasks further and turn lights off when they're not being used.

When you do need to toss away fluorescent light bulbs then attempt and do so responsibly. Contrasting filament light bulbs, they contain a tiny amount of mercury which is ecologically harmful if they are binned, so ask your local council about recycling facilities for light bulbs and do your part to keep them out of the garbage dump.

Now for the fun bit! Fluorescent lights are wonderful if you want to make a colour wash on the wall or against draperies. They can be recessed so that the glow seems to come magically from a hidden source and if the light shines against a reflective facade, you can produce a very spectacular effect. You can also talk to your electrician about installing more than one fluorescent tube so that you have a choice of colours at your fingertips.

FL lights of course occur in white but also four fundamental colours - red, yellow, green and blue. If not any of these suit your plan, you may put a white light following a coloured filter of your choice or even get coloured theatrical lighting gel which can be applied to the bulb to accomplish the effect you're after. There are even companies that sell bulbs previously coated, offering a range of colours if you can't face doing it yourself.

If you're putting together a lighting design bear in mind that fluorescent white light tends to look calm rather than warm. FL bulbs can be included into a dimmer system when of course they turn out to be less bright, but they won't produce a warm glow like a incandescent bulb. As well as being put onto dimmers your electrician could go one step further and incorporate them into a plan of pre-set scenes to create several mood alternatives for your room.

The reality is that in 2007 the US Administration announced that normal light bulbs are to be banned by 2011, which should help save around 5 million tonnes of CO2 by US household users alone. So it makes sense to get ready now for this new age in lighting. Light bulbs in the US are now graded A-G for environmental efficiency, so it's easy to pick ones that do less damage and that will save you money in the mid and long term. And it doesn't mean living in darkness - fluorescent lights have come a long way since their flickering early stages.

Six Techniques To Make Your Wallpapering Project Go Easier

Wallpapering, even more than painting, is a great do-it-yourself project. With a few hours of labor and some patience you can alter the entire theme of a space.

Although wallpapering appears easy, there are many techniques that the pros employ to achieve a great finish. There is nothing worse than putting in the work to repaper your walls, to see that you were making a simple error from the beginning which makes the work look unprofessional.

The next six guidelines can save you time and frustration.

1) Use activator instead of water for pre-pasted wallpaper. It allows for better adhesion, and stays wet for a longer period of time, as a result you can accurately place your wallpaper. It is a better practice to take the time to apply the activator, than to have your wallpaper fall off the wall in a few days or weeks.

2) Wallpaper varies from batch to batch. It may not be obvious in the roll, however once it is installed on the wall, you will see the discrepancy. Make certain while you get the wallpaper rolls they are from the matching batch. There will be a batch number on the sticker, also save your labels until you know the job is done, just in case you have to get additional rolls.

3) When choosing patterns, match up the seams properly. Some seams match easily, but some you have to slide the paper to acquire the perfect match.

4) Utilize the correct tool for getting clean straight cuts. You will want to use a razor-sharp blade and change it regularly. Although it will appear sharp to you, the cutting edge dulls fast and you are risking tearing your paper. A lot of pros use razor blades in a specialty handle.

5) Always work from the top and work down. Not only does gravity then aid you, but you are able to keep a better eye on your placement.

6) Repair and prep your surface. Many people think that putting up wallpaper will hide problems with their walls. Sorry to say, they are wrong, even with wallpaper you have to patch all holes and cracks. If you do not you will see the problems through the wallpaper. Luckily, there is a trick for very bad walls, panelling and cement blocks. You will need to do some patching, but paper liner will hide some problems. It is heavier than wallpaper, and allows for a number of discrepencies in the walls.

By implementing these 6 do-it-yourself tips, you are giving yourself a better probability of getting a professional looking job. It requires patience, so take your time, and you can get a wonderful looking room when you are finished.

Dust Mites – The Secret Invaders

No doubt you think you know all the inhabitants of your house well – family, friends, housemates, maybe a pet. But there are hidden unwanted guests in most UK homes. They are mean and ugly, they look like bizarre alien creatures from a science fiction film, oh and they could well be living in your bed. I’m talking of course about dust mites, the hidden menace in the home, which can't be seen by the naked eye but manage to cause trouble wherever they go.

Aside from being thoroughly unpleasant to think they could be living in your carpets and bedding, dust mites are also among the most common triggers of asthma, eczema and a whole host of other recurrent allergies. Technically it’s not the mites themselves but their droppings that disagree with people, as they are coated in a highly allergenic enzyme which causes a reaction in over 20% of the population. Their food is the 50 million dead skin cells that the average human sheds every day, and it can be very tough to get rid of them completely. Tough, but far from impossible. If you think there might be dust mites in your home, here are three tips that could help:

Keep it Clean – If you want to get rid of dust mites, the most obvious solution is to remove the dust. They like to live in ‘dust bunnies’ and deep in the carpet pile so regular hoovering, every day if necessary, will help to restrict their food supply and suck them out of the carpet too. Leave windows open whenever the weather is good enough as they don't like sunlight, and are so small that many of them will get blown away completely in a breeze!

Keep it Fresh –You might not think air quality would have much effect on dust mites considering they live in the carpet and furnishings, but in fact the right air conditioner could make all the difference. Even if you hoover every day the dust particles still have time to settle and for the mites to make new homes. Installing an air purifier with a HEPA filter literally removes all particles larger than 0.0003mm from the air before the dust can settle, meaning less food for mites.

Keep it Dry – Dust mites thrive in conditions where the air is moist with a relative humidity (RH) of 50% or higher. Different people have different ideas of the recommended RH in a home and it varies depending on where you live, but the most common recommendation is somewhere around 45%. If humidity levels in your home are above 50% it’s worth taking steps to reduce it as this will not only stop the mites but can also improve the general health of the occupants. Basic things like keeping windows open when cooking or showering can make a difference but if the problem persists then using a de humidifier is a quick and easy way to remove moisture from the air, maintaining the optimum RH and killing dust mites dead!

3 Instructions For DIY Paint Projects

One of the easiest and best renovation projects you can do is changing the paint color of a room. It is rather low-priced, nevertheless has a radical impression on the overall 'look' of any room in your home.

Painting is additionally one of the most popular do-it-yourself projects, but numerous people make some basic mistakes which can cause the completed job to look like it was a do-it-yourself project.

To create a professional paint job, there are simple techniques which will have a huge effect on your painting.

1. Always prime before you paint. Some time ago a friend of mine phoned in total disappointment. After painting a wall four times, he could still make out an old stain. He told me how following the first two coats it appeared to be good, but a couple of days later the stain came back. And after his fourth coat and a gallon of paint, he wasn't sure what to do.

My response. "Did you prime the walls?". Not surprisingly his response was no. I went on to explain to him that especially with stains, you have to use a sealing primer to stop a stain from bleeding through your new paint.

Paint provides durability and color, but primer is needed for bonding and stain blocking.

Save yourself time, frustration, and money. Prime prior to paint, it provides a nicer, smoother finish and seals any impurities from bleeding through the paint.

2. Select the right finish. There is nothing worse than spending hours painting to produce your new area, and in the first week someone puts a dirty hand print on your wall. You take your moist rag and wash it off, to realize you wiped off paint at the same time. Now your new wall has a distinct color blemish.

While you are picking your paint, ensure you are choosing the right finish as well as the color you want. You do not want to paint a flat finish in a high traffic spot as flat paint can't be cleaned often.

In the same case you don't want a high gloss finish in a room with a lot of natural light, as the walls will literally glisten and display every flaw or discrepancy in your wall.

Consider in terms of traffic, light, and room use as you decide on both your paint color and finish.

3. Let the paint work. You spend a lot of time prepping the walls or doors, meticulously sanding and priming so you will have the perfect finish. As you begin to paint you recognize there are horrible brush marks everywhere. All your prep work is for nothing if your paint brush leaves lines all over.

While you are painting with a brush, don't overwork the paint. Brush it on and let the paint flow to fill the brush marks. By pushing too hard or not using sufficient paint on your brush, you will not get rid of those brush marks.

If you do get brush marks, let it dry, sand with 220 grit sand paper to score the surface, and do it over again allowing the paint to fill in the lines, not you.

By using these three simple tips you will have a drastic impact on the way your paint project will look. Be patient when you prep, choose your proper paint, and allow the paint to do it's job. You will then be very pleased with the work that you put into it.

Helpful Advice About Steam Cleaners

BEST STEAM CLEANERS
Steam cleaners are used for many household-cleaning tasks particularly to remove dust, dirt and other foreign particles lodged deep in your carpet fibers and floor cracks. Likewise, it sanitizes and disinfects without the use of harsh chemical solutions. For some, it may resemble an ordinary vacuum cleaner, since it looks and basically operates in the same manner, but there are specific points that differentiate steam cleaners from vacuum cleaners.
A steam cleaner cleans and disinfects using water and heat (by producing hot steam over 200°F) to eliminate dust mites, molds, fungi and other harmful airborne spores that could be inhaled by your family.
Vacuum cleaner work through a nozzle that sucks up the dirt and deposits it into a dust bag. A steam cleaner on the other hand, operates by loosening the dirt from the surface with a hot hose tip, which is then absorbed by a cloth tied to the machine.
Now that both tools have been properly distinguished, your main concern is how to properly choose a steam cleaner that will suit your needs. Stylish flair, over-all functionality, quality and product efficiency should be your criteria in choosing the best steam cleaners for the job.
Sturdy, reliable and specifically designed for the purpose in mind – steam cleaners are made for effortless house cleaning. You get many benefits from steam cleaners enable you to clean off dirt and grime stuck on your carpet fibers and from hard-to-reach corners, stovetops, cracks on floors and tiles, vents and drains, car detailing and more. The process disinfects and eliminates dust mites, fleas, germs and other harmful microorganisms without using harsh chemical disinfectants, and effectively sanitizes and deodorizes odor in your house.
STEAM CLEANERS ON INFOMERCIALS
I never new what a steam cleaner was until I saw one on an infomercial one night. This type of a cleaner is sort of like a new toy for a big kid because now I was going to be able to clean with steam. What a cool concept and one that the infomercial made very appealing. I mean, I always cleaned my sink and toilets and other things but I never got them "steam" cleaned. Being able to clean them so that they were sanitary enough to eat off of was something that sounded very exciting.
On the TV spot they showed the steam coming out of the nozzle and decimating the dirt, just ripping it off the counters and sinks. It was truly spectacular how easy and fun it looked.
In reality though, the steam was just a little trickle that did very little to do away with the dirt. Even after setting it to the highest setting, it did very little to clean my sink's surface. I assumed I was doing something wrong but no matter what I did, the cleaner failed to clean. It made me confuse.
Steam can actually help clean things if it is harnessed correctly. It is common in carpet cleaning machines and can be used effectively to sanitize your carpets. But the handheld steam cleaner I got in the mail certainly wasn't a machine that could clean anything. It serves me right for my weak late night moment of watching infomercials.
